After this huge success, he didn't embark on another major project until 2000: Hagane. The plot is full of action and intrigue, and Kanzaki's typical atmosphere is once again palpable. The focus is on the young Hagane Yakushimaru, a tough girl ("Hagane" is the Japanese word for steel) who is passionate about motorcycling. During an illegal race, she sees a ghostly grimace and crashes, but wakes up in her bed. Was it just a dream? Possibly, but then how can all the blood on her motorcycle suit be explained? Hagane must find out what really happened after her crash. She will realize that she is part of the "Parasite Project," carried out by the enigmatic organization Red Sea: With the help of cells from famous personalities of the past, genetic tests are performed on test subjects, and Hagane is one of the victims. Now she has to decide: Should she flee for the rest of her life - or stand firm and fight against the Red Sea to get her life back? After all, the genes implanted in her belonged to Musashi Miyamoto, arguably the most famous warrior in Japanese history.
